چکیده

The ow of a closed surface of codimension 1 in R n driven by curvature is rst approximated by a singularly perturbed parabolic double obstacle problem with small parameter " > 0. Conforming piecewise linear nite elements, with mass lumping, over a quasi-uniform and weakly acute mesh of size h are further used for space discretization, and combined with forward diierences for time discretization with uniform time-step. The resulting explicit schemes are the basis for an ee-cient algorithm, the so-called dynamic mesh algorithm, and exhibit nite speed of propagation and discrete nondegeneracy. No iteration is required, not even to handle the obstacle constraints. The zero level set of the fully discrete solution is shown to converge past singularities to the true interface, provided ; h 2 o(" 4) and no fattening occurs. If the more stringent relations ; h 2 O(" 6) are enforced, then an interface rate of convergence O(") is derived in the vicinity of regular points, along with a companion O(" 1=2) for type I singularities. For smooth ows, an interface rate of convergence of O(" 2) is proven, provided ; h 2 O(" 5) and exact integration is used for the potential term. The analysis is based on constructing fully discrete barriers via an explicit parabolic projection with quadrature, which bears some intrinsic interest, Lipschitz properties of viscosity solutions of the level set approach, and discrete nondegeneracy. These basic ingredients are also discussed.

Implicit-Explicit Time Stepping with Spatial Discontinuous Finite Elements

In this paper a combination of discontinuous, piecewise linear, finite elements with implicitexplicit time stepping is considered for convection-reaction equations. Combined with low order quadrature rules, this leads to convenient schemes. We shall consider the effect of such low order quadrature rules on accuracy and stability for one-dimensional problems. 2000 Mathematics Subject Classificat...

External and Internal Incompressible Viscous Flows Computation using Taylor Series Expansion and Least Square based Lattice Boltzmann Method

The lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) has recently become an alternative and promising computational fluid dynamics approach for simulating complex fluid flows. Despite its enormous success in many practical applications, the standard LBM is restricted to the lattice uniformity in the physical space. This is the main drawback of the standard LBM for flow problems with complex geometry. Several app...

A General Solution for Implicit Time Stepping Scheme in Rate-dependant Plasticity

In this paper the derivation of the second differentiation of a general yield surface implicit time stepping method along with its consistent elastic-plastic modulus is studied. Moreover, the explicit, trapezoidal implicit and fully implicit time stepping schemes are compared in rate-dependant plasticity. It is shown that implementing fully implicit time stepping scheme in rate-dependant plasti...

Efficiency of Anti-Hourglassing Approaches in Finite Element Method (TECHNICAL NOTE)

one of the simplest numerical integration method which provides a large saving in computational efforts, is the well known one-point Gauss quadrature which is widely used for 4 nodes quadrilateral elements. On the other hand, the biggest disadvantage to one-point integration is the need to control the zero energy modes, called hourglassing modes, which arise. The efficiency of four different an...

An Explicit Multi Time Stepping Algorithm for Aerodynamic Flows

An explicit multi time stepping algorithm with applications to aerodynamic flows is presented. In the algorithm in different parts of the computational domain different time steps are taken, and the flow is synchronized at so-called synchronization levels. The algorithm is validated for aerodynamic turbulent flows. For two dimensional flows speedups in the order of five with respect to single t...
